This is Our Game

This is our game, the way we play. Our Referee (the Den Mother) learned with John Eric Holmes boxed set and Tom Moldvay’s red book. The players grew up with 3.5 and 4E, but when they tried the classic versions, they were open to new possibilities. The system is just fun to tinker with. Like Frankenstein’s monster, we pulled parts from different entities to make the game we play. Some of it was wholly original, born out of our fevered imaginations and perceptions—the way we thought things should be; other parts were inspired by articles we read or games we participated in: if it seemed to work and make things go faster at the table, we tried it.

Den Mother rewrote the rulebook we play with using the skeleton of the Moldvay redbook. Our house-rulebook is something of a Frankenstein creation, a cut and paste monstrosity that looks familiar until you begin to inspect its parts more closely. What we play is the classic fantasy role-playing game and it is not. We took to heart the notions that the rules are guidelines, intended to be used or thrown away and replaced as we saw fit and the declaration that if we changed things we were no longer playing the original game, but something of our own. We christened our monster Denizens and Delvers, a name as clever and as cheesy as we think ourselves to be. If we can provide the beastly arm for someone else’s amalgamated game system that would be the greatest honor. If we can amuse you with a rule that is so ridiculous it’s laughable, that’s fine as well.

Play them or poke fun at them, fun is after all what the game is supposed to be about.

The Denizens and Delvers section will contain our rules, specifically the systems that differ from the original game books, where we veer off the classic path.

The Delver’s Handbook will contain rules for the players: new races, new talents, equipment, etc. Things that make our experience fun.

Denizens Digest is our monster manual. We have a few things bumping around in here.

Dens and Delves will be our mini-adventure section. As well as tips and tricks by, and for, Den Mother’s everywhere.

Play the game your way, or try it ours. The bottom line is PLAY.
